Summer
Immersion
in the Liberal Arts

Summer Immersion prepares students to enter, navigate, and influence the educational experience at Vassar.

Summer Immersion 2022 will take place virtually: July 6th-July 22nd.

Developed by Vassar’s Engaged Pluralism Initiative, Summer Immersion in the Liberal Arts is a free of charge experience for incoming Vassar first-years, designed with historically underrepresented groups in mind. During the summer prior to their first semester, Summer Immersion students forge connections, build community, and envision the Vassar–and the world–they want to create.

As a cohort, Summer Immersion participants connect with members of the Vassar community–professors, staff, current students, and graduates–before arriving on campus for the fall semester. Summer Immersion students explore Vassar’s global liberal arts curriculum and become familiar with the range of resources that are available to them as they prepare to embark on their college journey.

This year, Summer Immersion will offer a unique experience that includes:

  • A diverse range of ungraded “mini-courses” offered by 14 professors across different fields
  • STEM Experiential, which offers opportunities to engage with ongoing summer lab research (click here to see a lab tour video with Hadley Bergstrom, Assistant Professor of Psychological Science)
  • Informational sessions with various administrative offices across Vassar, including “How to Choose Your Classes” with the Dean of First Years and a Q&A with Student Financial Services
  • Short Films/ Big Stories,” a short-film series that consist of screenings and conversations with three up-and-coming film directors
  • A keynote speech by a Vassar grad who will reflect on their experience as a first generation/low-income student at Vassar (click here for a glimpse at last year’s keynote speaker, Alyssa Maldonado-Estrada, Assistant Professor of Religion at Kalamazoo College)
  • Panels with first-generation and/or low-income students and professors
  • Mentorship matching with current Vassar students
